On June 14, When Cristyn Zloza took 2nd place at the 2014 PetQuest poodle tournament in Wilmington, Ohio, it was more than a win for her skill in grooming. It was also a testament to the power of dog rescue — because Aurora, the dog Cristyn groomed for the competition, is a miniature poodle that she and her husband Michael rescued two years ago from almost certain death. Inhumanely debarked and cruelly used in a puppy mill, Aurora was one of hundreds of dogs rescued by a group with which the Zlozas are affiliated. The couple, who own and operate the grooming salon Spotted Paw Shop in Wheaton, are dedicated to dog rescue and know first-hand the difference a safe, loving home can make for a dog who has been subjected to the horrors of a puppy mill. Even after two years, Aurora’s coat still shows signs of the incredible stress and inhumane living conditions she suffered, but with the Zlozas help, she’s not just winning grooming competitions, she’s also learning what life is meant to be for a loving dog. ...
examiner.com – Black Friday brought about a new discovery for me while I was out and about in the Christmas rush. While shopping at Danada, I discovered the new Spotted Paw Spa Boutique that took the place of Sports Fan and the previous pet shop that had a residence there. I really liked the look of the Spotted Paw, so I stopped in. Then, since I knew that I was not prepared to do them justice, I stopped back today so that I could get their total story. Michael and Cristyn Zloza, co-owners, and more importantly, husband and wife team extraordinaire, were only too happy to tell me all about their new store. They wanted to explain their philosophies, goals and layout of their store. Since they have only been open a little more than a week, they were thrilled to get their story out to the masses. It is IMPORTANT to them to get their story out to the masses! The Spotted Paw has a fantastic philosophy that there will be absolutely no tolerance for any physical or verbal abuse to any animal entrusted to their care; either for grooming or for their doggy-day-care. To go hand-in-hand with that philosophy, Michael and Cris have built their store to have a transparent appearance – in fact, transparency is the key to their success. The entire back room, where the grooming and day-care take place can be viewed from the entire front of the store. After the dogs are screened for their temperament, if they are viewed as having a good temperament, they are able to run and play in the room so that they are not constantly caged. This atmosphere lends itself to their other philosophy of maintaining a STRESS-FREE, CLEAN, SAFE and LOVING experience for both your beloved dog AND you! Because of this part of their philosophy, Michael and Cris utilize lots of praise and positive reinforcement that helps them to succeed! They are so bent on maintaining their goals that they actually interviewed 40 groomers and only selected two of them. Besides them and the two groomers, they have one full-time and one part-time bather for the dogs. Their goal in this respect is to maintain quality vs. quantity! Besides the grooming and day-care, Spotted Paw is accentuating the fact that their customers are the most important aspect of their business! Their business is not very full yet with boutique products as they want to customize the products to their customers’ desires; ie: Doggie Blackhawk Jerseys! This product would be perfect in my household since Q is our goalie dog and serves that purpose for his two hockey playing brothers. I don’t know about you, but I am excited to see exactly what this great store...
Pets in Halloween costumes can be a hoot, but discomfort or injury is nothing to laugh about, so observe these safety tips from Blue Buffalo. Remove any dangling decorations or strings that can be crewed, keep fur and skin away from zippers and check to see that seams don’t cause irritation. Make sure your pet has freedom of movement – short legged dogs like Dachhunds and Scotties can get their front paws caught inside a costume.
